Converting Decimals to Fractions: Example

Rule 28:: For this review, we will focus on terminating fractions. Divide the fraction by 1, and then multiply the result by 1 in a form that will remove the decimal.

Example:

Convert 11.0895 to a simple fraction.

Answer:

The decimal 11.0895 can be written tex2html_wrap_inline34

The fraction tex2html_wrap_inline34

can also be divided by 1 without changing the value.

The fraction tex2html_wrap_inline40 can be reduced.

tex2html_wrap_inline42 .

The only prime factors of the numerator, 22179, are 3 and 7393, and the only prime factors of the denominator, 2000, are 2 and 5. Since the numerator and the denominator do not share a common factor, the answer tex2html_wrap_inline44 cannot be reduced further.
